Toronto is not kind to wheels. Between the freeze-thaw roller coaster that turns slush into rock-hard ice overnight, the mountains of road salt dumped on the 401 and Gardiner every winter, and the gravel that pelts your rims from construction zones on the DVP, your factory paint finish is fighting a losing battle from November through April.
We see it every spring: drivers across Vaughan, Mississauga, North York, and Scarborough come to us with rims that looked perfect in September but are now pitted, peeling, and corroded after just one winter season. That road salt doesn’t just sit on the surface & it works into paint chips and starts corrosion underneath the clear coat, spreading damage you can’t see until it’s too late.
This is exactly why powder coating has become the go-to finish for GTA drivers who want protection that actually lasts. Unlike traditional paint, a powder-coated finish creates an impermeable barrier that salt simply cannot penetrate. The baked-on polymer layer is two to three times thicker than spray paint, meaning it absorbs stone chips, curb contact, and brake dust without cracking through to bare metal.
We typically see a 70% spike in service requests each spring from drivers dealing with winter damage to painted rims. Drivers who opted for powder coating the previous fall? Most of them come back with rims that still look the way they did on day one.
Hazard | What It Does to Paint | How Powder Coating Handles It |
Road Salt (75,000+ tonnes/season) | Seeps into chips, causes hidden corrosion and peeling | Impermeable barrier blocks salt penetration completely |
Freeze-Thaw Cycles | Expands trapped moisture, cracks and lifts clear coat | Molecular-bonded finish flexes without cracking |
Potholes (DVP, Gardiner, QEW) | Impact chips through thin paint layers on contact | 2–3x thicker coating absorbs impact |
Curb Contact (Yorkville, Queen West, Distillery) | Scrapes through paint instantly, exposing metal | Tougher surface resists scrapes; repairable if damaged |
Gradually strips gloss, causes staining | Chemical-resistant polyester resin repels contaminants | |
Construction Gravel | Stone chips form entry points for corrosion | Thick finish absorbs small impacts without chipping |
Powder coating is a dry finishing process where finely ground particles of pigment and resin are electrostatically charged and sprayed onto a metal surface. Unlike traditional liquid paint that relies on solvents, the charged powder clings to the grounded metal evenly and completely, including hard-to-reach areas between spokes that spray paint often misses.
Once applied, the coated rims enter a specialized curing oven where temperatures reach approximately 200°C (400°F). This heat causes the powder particles to melt, flow together, and chemically cross-link, forming a single continuous shell that is molecularly bonded to the metal. The result is not a layer sitting on top of your rim & it becomes part of the rim itself.
This is what sets powder coating apart from every other finish option:
Charged particles are attracted to the grounded wheel surface, ensuring complete coverage with zero runs or drips. Every contour, spoke, and inner lip gets uniform protection.
Charged particles are attracted to the grounded wheel surface, ensuring complete coverage with zero runs or drips. Every contour, spoke, and inner lip gets uniform protection.
Powder coating applies at 2–3 mils thickness versus 0.5–1 mil for traditional paint. That extra thickness translates directly to better impact and chip resistance.
The polyester or epoxy resins used in powder coating resist road salt, brake fluid, gasoline, and wheel-cleaning chemicals that would damage or strip conventional paint.
Powder coating is 100% solids with zero volatile organic compounds (VOCs). Overspray is collected and reused rather than vented into the atmosphere.
In practical terms for GTA driving conditions, a properly applied powder coat finish lasts three to five times longer than traditional paint. We regularly see powder-coated rims maintain their appearance for five to ten years with basic maintenance, while painted rims in the same conditions typically need refinishing every one to two winters.
Every powder coating job we handle follows a meticulous seven-step process. Cutting corners on any step compromises the final result, which is why we follow this procedure without exception:

Before we touch a wheel, we check for structural issues: bends, hairline cracks, or damage that needs repair before coating. Applying powder over a compromised wheel is a waste of money, so we address any issues upfront.

All existing paint, clear coat, and corrosion is removed down to bare metal. We use a combination of chemical stripping and media blasting to ensure the surface is completely clean. This step alone takes more time than some shops spend on an entire job.

The bare metal is sanded and prepped to create an optimal surface profile for powder adhesion. Any curb rash, scratches, or minor imperfections are filled and shaped at this stage.

Even after stripping, microscopic oils and contaminants remain on the metal. A thorough chemical wash and degrease ensures nothing interferes with the electrostatic bond.

Lug holes, valve stems, hub mounting surfaces, and any areas that require precise tolerances are carefully masked to prevent powder buildup where it would cause fitment issues.

Using a specialized spray gun, electrostatically charged powder particles are applied to the grounded wheel. The electrostatic charge ensures even distribution across the entire surface, including recessed areas and inner barrel.

The coated wheel enters the curing oven at approximately 200°C. After curing, the wheel is slowly cooled and undergoes a final quality inspection for coverage uniformity, colour consistency, and surface finish before we return it to you.
The entire process typically takes 4 to 5 business days from pickup to delivery. For clients who need faster turnaround, we offer same-day service on standard colour options by appointment.
The cost of powder coating your rims depends on several factors including wheel size, the colour and finish you choose, and whether any repair work is needed before coating. Here is a general pricing guide based on our standard GTA rates:
Rim Size | Standard Colour | Custom / Metallic | Two-Stage / Candy |
15–17″ | $150 – $175 per wheel | $175 – $200 per wheel | $200 – $250 per wheel |
18–19″ | $175 – $200 per wheel | $200 – $250 per wheel | $250 – $300 per wheel |
20–22″ | $200 – $250 per wheel | $250 – $300 per wheel | $300 – $375 per wheel |
Additional factors that may affect your final quote:
Pre-Coating Repairs: If your rims have curb rash, bends, or cracks, these need to be repaired before powder is applied. Repair costs range from $80 to $150 per wheel depending on severity, but we often bundle this at a discount when combined with powder coating.
On-Site Wheel Removal: An additional $20 per rim workshop fee applies when our technician removes wheels and tires on-site at your location.
Quantity Discount: Coating a full set of four wheels in one session is more cost-effective than individual wheels, since oven cycles use the same energy regardless.
Pick-Up & Delivery: We offer pick-up and drop-off service throughout the GTA for clients who prefer not to have the work done at their location.
All prices are in Canadian Dollars. For an exact quote tailored to your specific wheels, use our instant quote form below or call us at 416-876-6549.
Powder Coating vs. Alternatives: Long-Term Cost Comparison
Option | Upfront Cost (per wheel) | Expected Lifespan (GTA) | 5-Year Total Cost | Salt / Chip Resistance |
Powder Coating | $150 – $300 | 5 – 10 years | $150 – $300 | Excellent |
Spray Paint Refinish | $100 – $175 | 1 – 2 winters | $300 – $525 | Low |
OEM Wheel Replacement | $600 – $2,500 | Factory dependent | $600 – $2,500 | Varies |
DIY Rattle Can | $15 – $60 | 3 – 6 months | $150 – $600 | Very Low |
Even factoring in the higher upfront cost, powder coating typically pays for itself within two years compared to repainting, especially in the GTA where salt and freeze-thaw cycles destroy paint finishes every winter.

Powder coating is a dry finishing process where electrostatically charged powder particles are sprayed onto a grounded metal surface. Unlike liquid paint that uses solvents, the charged powder clings evenly to the wheel and is then baked in a curing oven at 200°C. This creates a chemical bond with the metal that is two to three times thicker and significantly more durable than conventional paint. The result is a finish that resists chips, scratches, salt corrosion, and fading far better than any paint job.
Yes. We offer hundreds of colour and finish options including gloss, matte, satin, metallic, and textured finishes. Popular choices among GTA clients include satin black, gloss gunmetal, and hyper silver. We can also do custom colour matching to complement your vehicle. Two-stage and candy finishes are available for clients wanting a more unique look.
With proper care, powder-coated rims typically maintain their finish for five to ten years, even in GTA winter conditions. That is three to five times longer than traditional paint, which often needs refinishing after one or two salt seasons. Regular hand-washing and an annual ceramic coating application will maximize the lifespan of your finish.
Pricing depends on rim size, colour choice, and whether any repairs are needed before coating. Standard colours on 17–19 inch rims typically range from $175 to $250 per wheel. Custom metallics and two-stage finishes run higher. We provide instant quotes, just send us a photo of your worst rim and we will give you an exact price within minutes.
Yes, and this is important. Powder coating over existing curb rash, scratches, or bends will lock that damage under the new finish. We inspect and repair all damage before coating begins. This is actually one of the advantages of choosing us because you get refurbished wheels and a premium finish in one process, at a fraction of the cost of buying new rims.
We offer two options. For our mobile service, our technician comes to your location, removes the wheels, and handles the full powder coating process. For pick-up and drop-off service, we collect the wheels from your address, coat them at our facility, and return them to your door. Same-day service is available for standard colours by appointment.
Significantly. The molecular bond and thickness of powder coating make it far more resistant to road salt, freeze-thaw cycles, and gravel impacts than paint. We see painted rims start deteriorating after their first GTA winter, while powder-coated rims handled in the same conditions show minimal wear. If you drive through winter in the GTA, powder coating is the better investment.
Absolutely. We handle Tesla rims regularly! Model 3, Model Y, Model S, and Model X. Tesla wheels are particularly popular for powder coating because the OEM finishes tend to be sensitive to Toronto road conditions. Satin black and matte gunmetal are the most common Tesla colour requests we receive.
Mobile Alloy Rim Repair specializes in the repair of curb rash, scuffs, and scratches, plus repainting and refinishing rims in the GTA Area.
